Tips before visiting a nursery: ask if they specialize in native diversity. If so, what is the range of area where they collect seed or seedlings? Make sure they do not use Neonicotinoids to treat the soil of plants in their nursery. These pesticides will linger for years in the soil you bring home.

When you are visiting a nursery, check to be sure transplants have sufficient roots. Pull the plant out the pot. Roots should be able to hold the potting soil from falling away from roots. They should not be a solid mass of roots.
